Every New Yorker should watch this!
This is a great documentary on a side of New York City most people know nothing about. It is fascinating to find out that a good portion of Manhattan is actually built on garbage and it is frightening to think how much we still produce today. It goes through the history of this problem in NYC from its founding to the present and some of the solutions. This is definitely a must see.
the story of trash and society.
NO other tv series has ever really tackled the effect of trash on history. This one does that for sure! It also shows how the modern city takes care of the trash problem. The rome episode really gets into layers of history to show how they built the sewers and how they dealt with the trash of Rome. Each episode ,which was on the excellent smithsonian tv channel features a different city and it's a fascinating look into the history of a city and how trash impacted that cities planning and function!. It's in hd on amazon.com instant video too. Each episode is a different city. And I rented everyone of them. The cairo one was the most horrific one , with barbaric modern savages killing off pigs and whole sections of the city buried in trash. (the trash people live there). Still every city featured in this show had some really horrendous past experiences with trash and disease. and rotting corpses in the streets. This show , made me appreciate todays methods of waste disposal even more...
